Is Direct Mailing Marketing Still Effective?

Simon Cheng who is a reader on my blog dropped me a question on my email and asked me whether direct mailing still works in the internet marketing community, this is what i feel personally since selling by mail can be easy and relatively inexpensive as compared to advertising them on websites or blogs paying monthly fees that could be out of your budget.

However you sucess depends on the methods you use in presenting your offering to your prospects. In direct mail marketing, you are sending your "salesmen" out to sell for you. If you have 1000 offers of your products and you give each salesman one product to sell for you, what are the chances of the products being sold in terms of reach in an automated method. Let us look at the advantage and disadvantage of using direct mail as your marketing plan.

Advantage to using direct mail as part of your marketing plan

Targeting a very specific group and taking your message directly to them, you have the ability to have complete control over the people who receives your advertising message and who doesn't. If you are targeting on opportunity seekers, a quality mailing list can let you focus on that specific group.
A well planned direct mail campaign can result in the most consistent and predictable method of customer generation and it provides great flexibility in message presentation.
Develop a distinctive personality for your business. It can enhance your image, giving your customers information and persuade them to place an order on your product.

Disadvantage of direct mail

They are often considered to be junk mail, this might have occured to you often when you receive many unknown emails that sells you products that are not what you are interested. Seldom does a one shot mailing have desired result. You must have a long term, well thought out marketing plan.
Your piece is competing with dozens of other pieces for attention, if you do not know what you are doing, it is easy to waste a lot of money.

In a couple of my post back on18 remarkable tactics used to drive traffic and 101 tips I learned from blogging in 2007. I talk about the same thing that is pretty important yet seldom bloggers practice which is to use the pinging services provided for free.

So What is Pinging? "Ping is a XML-RPC-based push mechanism by which a weblog notifies a server that its content has been updated. An XML-RPC signal is sent to one or more "ping servers," which can then generate a list of blogs that have new material. Many blog authoring tools automatically ping one or more servers each time the blogger creates a new post or updates an old one." source (Wikipedia)

To put it into simple English, it means a service to update different search engines that your blog has been updated and allows your post to be generated into the search engines directory. The bigger your ping list the higher the chances of receiving traffic from those sources.

Do you blog for the mass public's views or do you blog to target a certain niche group of readers on your blog? Today I will share with you, how you are able to attract a general crowd to be interested in your topic yet giving your fair share of interest to your loyal readers who drop by everyday without fail.

Many bloggers have stress the point on communicating to a niche group that your blog targets. For example, if you are a make money online blog, then you should try to write more keyword related information on "Make Money Online" and how you can make more money by using affiliate programs or if you interested in photography, then you should bring topics like how you can use the different lightings and Shots to bring the beauty of the photo you are about to take. Make sure you can define the allies you need so that you can focus your message, resources and strategy where it counts.

Attracting the General Crowd
Where are you able to find this massive and viral crowd from the internet? It is the buzzword one year back though it still works very well with a number of successful network still running. "Social Media" creates a massive large unknown,unique array of visitors to drop by your blog base on "curiousity" and tagged along by the interesting "Blog Title", you have given on your own social network circle.

The Niche Readers Who Reads your Blog
If you have a niche topic to talk about on your blog then you would have a strong list of readers who will follow you daily on what you have installed for them. Giving them qualities updates is very important and instead of post that do not make sense or does not have any values instill within. If you have nothing worth blogging, then do not blog and let the days past, it would be better than making irrelevant post which will only make your readers more frustrated.

Jonathan Field had a list of bloggers who answered his question on when to niche or not and these are what some of the bloggers felt:

Maki | DoshDosh.com - It depends on your goals and resources. If you are creating a blog purely for fun and to satisfy your interests, it doesn’t really make a difference if you build multiple sites or a single blog. If you’re using the blog as a means to generate direct or indirect income, you should probably start by examining your resources to see if you have the time or energy to market and maintain multiple niche blogs.I personally like to create a single blog which encompasses a variety of topics, because all my link building and marketing efforts are concentrated on one place: this can possibly lead to better results because of a naturally greater and more unified focus. One blog to market, one blog to write for. Once the blog has gotten a decent readership, its possible to leverage the attention you’ve gotten by creating smaller niche blogs and sending your audience to them. However, if the topics you plan to explore are too dissimilar, it might be better to build several niche blogs because that allows you to brand them more cohesively. I’ll make sure to keep the amount of blogs to a manageable level (2 to 4 may be optimal).If you have the resources (money + time ), you could build up several niche blogs simultaneously and inter-promote them, especially if they are in related fields. But they have a very defined audience that just gobbles up all of those topics.Now, if you do a technology blog and talk about stay-at-home parenting and scrapbooking, I would split those into different blogs, because they have different audiences. Of course, there will always be a small number of people who share all of your interests, but is that small group of people really your target audience? Figure that out, and you have your course of action already planned.

Yaro Starak | Entrepreneurs-journey.com - That really depends on the topics. I’m inclined to focus on one blog only as the blog you write to because I aim for a two hour “blogging” day, and with multiple blogs that can be quite difficult to achieve. So my advice would be to either find a way to make all the topics go together, or drop one or two, build up an audience, and then start branching out when your audience becomes attached to you and your blog, so changing topics now and then doesn’t hurt so much.

Asking questions intensifies your interest in, and understanding of, ideas and concepts. One of the questioning technique which is commonly used is the 5 Whys. This is a straight and forward but effective technique stemmed initially from the world of manufacturing production.

Toyota pioneered the technique in the 1970s to attack the root causes of manufacturing problems rather than treat the symptoms or the contributory causes. The technique recognises that very often the ostensible reason for a problem will lead you to another question. Yahoo Buzz is finally open to the public to submit their content to the social news network. Back then, a small handful of publishers could submit content in a bid to iron out any pre-public release kinks. Yahoo Buzz is very much a mainstream social news site with huge potential.

Yahoo Buzz allows anyone to submit and vote upon content much like you would expect from the like of the already established digg.com. We might have found a contender to overthrow the likes of Giant Social sites, Digg and Stumbleupon. But can Yahoo Buzz live up to its expectation?

Some of the main factors we see YB has that could seriously take the beating of their rivals.

Stories on Yahoo buzz to some extent is controlled by human intervention.

Chinese Social Media Network Site Kaixin001 Receives Its Largest Boost of 5 Million Dollars

Here is something interesting for those who do not know, the largest social media network in China, Kaixin001.com, an exact clone of Facebook receives a big boost from NLVC Yesterday.

CNET reported, Kaixin001, receives a USD 4 to 5 million dollar investment from Northern Light Venture Capital. Why would NLVC invest in a social media networking site? According to the statement, "Northern Light is optimistic about the model of Kaixin001.com. On the other hand, the partners of Northern Light believe in the abilities of Cheng Binghao, the founder of Kaixin001.com."

Kaixin001 was made to attract the Chinese community to flock over to their giant social media network and offer what Facebook could not offer on their own site. Looking at the Alexa Traffic graph, you see a sharp rise over the past months and this bullish point could soon see a new reach in the next couple of months.

"Kaixin001.com is now a popular SNS website that provides games and functions such as fighting for parking spaces, votes and tests. People can earn awards through these games or by inviting their friends to register on the website. Relying on these unique features, the website has gained great popularity, especially among white collar Chinese, since May 2008. I guess Facebook will still stay on my number one social media networking site and once Kaixin001 opens its gate to the international members then I will have switched over so that I am able to use the 1GB space given unless Facebook does their interim measures to curb against what Kaixin001 have to offer.
